"This is an emergency number only for women facing complaints of domestic violence," said an NCW member.

In a tweet, NCW requested people to report such cases through WhatsApp on the number so that the agency can provide support and assistance to women in distress or experiencing domestic violence.

The NCW said that the number has been activated only for the duration of the lockdown till normal offices resume.

The announcement comes amid an increase in cases of domestic violence due to the ongoing lockdown. It has been found that many women victims of domestic violence are more vulnerable during the lockdown period.

Earlier on Friday, NCW organized an online conference with all state commissions for women to strengthen all support networks available to women as per the orders of the commissions and to discuss how the commissions deal with complaints of domestic violence in their respective states during the lockdown.

"Discussions to explore the possibility of providing counseling through online and phone services. Counseling is also important in cases of complaints received and all state commissions for women will soon nominate counselors to activate counselling. #WomenHelplineUnit #181 #112," NCW said. Another tweet.

"Make full use of the 181 women's helplines and shelters, coordinate with OSC for redressal of grievances and distress," NCW said.

The NCW said it will identify institutions at the district level to train local volunteers who can then reach out and provide assistance to women and children in distress.

National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma recently said that complaints of domestic violence have been increasing day by day since the nationwide lockdown was implemented on March 25, with 69 complaints received through email alone.

From March 24 to April 1, 257 complaints related to various crimes against women were received.

Out of 257, 69 complaints are related to domestic violence, the latest data released by NCW shows. India is currently under the largest lockdown in which nearly 1.3 billion people have been asked to stay at home due to the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed nearly 200 lives and infected more than 6,400.
